Statement of Purpose:
Local history museum, with emphasis on social,
cultural
and technological history of the Town of Amherst.
The Amherst Museum is a municipal historic museum for
the Town of
Amherst, the largest suburb of Buffalo, N.Y.
We have a 35-acre site that includes two primary exhibit buildings and,
most
importantly, a collection of 11 authentic 19th-century buildings from
different
parts of town that have been moved here. All but three of these
buildings,
which include six homes (of different styles and size), two churches
(including
a log chapel), two one-room schoolhouses and a small barbershop, have
been
restored to their original condition. They are furnished with period
pieces to
give the public a sense of how people lived in Amherst in the 1800s and are used for
interpretive tours from May through October.
Highlights & Collections:
In addition to the historic buildings, the
exhibit
buildings also offer visitors the chance to see a wide cross section of
19th-century artifacts. In the main building, with more than 20,000
square feet
of exhibit space, there are several exhibitions. They include:; the
Schmidt
Gallery of Decorative Arts, which features some of the fine china and
decorative pieces common to the more prosperous Amherst residents; the
Communications Gallery, which documents the early history of radio and
wireless
communications and local contributions to this field; the Avenue of
Shops, 19th-century
dioramas of a general store, watchmaker/jeweler's shop, barber shop and
apothecary; Textile Gallery, which has changing exhibits from our
extensive
costume and textile collection, including one of the finest collections
of
antique wedding gowns in North America and a large collection of
antique quilts
and replicas. Visit the Amherst Museum’s web site, www.amherstmuseum.org, for a
complete
listing of current exhibits.
Exhibits & Special Events:
Local history exhibits, 35 acre site with
restored 19th
century buildings.
In addition to the exhibits on display, there are several folk
art guilds
affiliated with the Museum.
Members of these groups preserve the traditions of quilting,
lacemaking,
blacksmiths, weaving, Victorian Dance, herb gardening and more to pass
these
vital parts of this region s history to future generations. The
Museum’s
Niederlander Research Library is known as one of the area's best
sources of
genealogical information and research assistance.
If that is not enough, there are several special events every
year at the
Museum that do even more to bring this history to life.
For a complete listing of Special Events, visit our website at www.amherstmuseum.org.
Hours:
Amherst
Museum is
open
year-round from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday -Friday. From May -
October, the
Museum is also open Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30-4:30 p.m. The
Museum is
closed Mondays and municipal holidays. The schedule changes somewhat
with
special events.

General Admission is $5 for adults, $1.50 for
children
ages 5-18, free to kids 5 and under and $12 for a family of six. Museum members are admitted free of charge.

From all points, take New York
State Thruway (I-90) to the
Youngmann Expressway
(I-290) to Exit 4, which goes to the Lockport
Expressway (I-990). Follow the 990 north to the end, which is Millersport Highway.
Make a left there and another left at New Road, which is the second
intersection you see on
Millersport (.8 miles from the 990). Follow New Road for about 1 mile, until
you come
to the first intersection, which is Tonawanda Creek Road. We re right
there on the corner,
across the street from the former New York State
Barge Canal.
