Statement of Purpose:
The Nicolaysen Art Museum and Discovery Center celebrates life
through art by creating an understanding of the visual arts. The Nic is
a regional museum which promotes the appreciation of art through
education, acquisition, self discovery and exhibits
with strong emphasis on the regional arts.
This mission is to be accomplished with a high regard for quality
and creativity, and with policies and programs that insure financial
self-sufficiency, a challenging and satisfying environment sensitive to
our community, and a clear focus on the needs
and interests of our diverse audience.
OBJECTIVES
- Offer exhibits that are creative, educational and enjoyable;
that set high standards for quality and promote the appreciation of the
visual arts.
- Acquire and maintain pieces of visual art for inclusion in the
permanent collection.
- Conduct educational programs in art education that serve all
ages and backgrounds using interpretive and integrative programming.
- Manage the museum so that it is financially self supporting on
a continuing basis with adequate reserves for necessary maintenance,
improvement and replacement of equipment and facility, in order to meet
the museum's not-for-profit objectives.
- Maintain strict adherence to the highest standards of quality
and seek active participation and collaboration with like museums
throughout our region.
- Create and maintain a work environment for paid and volunteer
staff that promotes teamwork, attracts competent and motivated people
and provides creative challenges and incentives.
- Enrich the quality of life in our community by providing a
cultural and education resource that promotes an appreciation of the
region, remains sensitive to community needs and opens the doors of
wonder and beauty to minds of all ages.
Highlights & Collections:
The museum showcases artists of the Rocky Mountain region with both
rotating temporary exhibitions and exhibitions from the museum's
permanent collection. The museum has a superb gift shop featuring
specialty items found now where else in the area as
well as art on consignment from many regional artists and craftsmen.
The museum offers both a research library and a children's
library which supplement and enhance the educational opportunities for
the museum visitor. Books are available for loan from both libraries.
The Discovery Center offers a wide variety of educational
activities for children and adults alike. Changing stations relate
current exhibitions to interesting and fun activities for the young
museum visitor. Art Camps, classes and workshops are also
available which are taught by area artists and educators.

The Museum is open Tuesday thru
Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
and on Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00pm. The Museum is CLOSED on Monday.

From I-25 (north or south), exit at Center Street (exit number
188a). Turn south. Travel approximately 7 blocks to the traffic light
at 2nd Street (the third traffic light after the Interstate). Turn east
(left). Travel 3 blocks to the traffic light
at Beech Street (the third traffic light after 2nd). Turn south
(right). Travel 1 block. The Museum is on the left at the corner of
Beech Street and Collins Drive. Parking lot entrance on Beech Street.
