Gonzalez, a Cuban-American artist, died in 1993 after achieving wide acclaim as a supreme draftsman. A recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts awards, Gonzalez's drawings and paintings created "illusionistic magic. " His works exude pathos, intelligence, and unmatched delicacy.
Salvador Dali (1904-1988) is one of the best known artists of this century. Today his Surrealistic images are in major museums worldwide, none more prominent than the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, which houses what is considered the most comprehensive collection of Dali' s work in the world. For the first time in its history, the Dali Museum will allow a large segment of its collection to travel to another institution: the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale. The Museum of Art's exhibition will include at least thirty paintings; numerous drawings, watercolors, prints, and pastels; and approximately ten sculptures, all by Dali.
Florencio Gelabert is one of the most gifted and promising young artists to arrive from Cuba in the last few years. His conceptual sculptures illustrate a perfect balance between powerful ideas and faultless craftsmanship. This exhibition is multi-media and addresses, in a subtle but poignant fashion, the sculptor's viewpoint on oppression and redemption.
Laurence Pamer, Curator of Exhibitions, and Jorge Santis, Curator of Collections, will organize an exhibition of their favorite works from the Museum of Art's Permanent Collection. The focus will not be on the best known or most valuable pieces but on those which appeal most to each curator's sensitivities. The show will present an interesting insight into Pamer's and Santis' personal tastes.
Last year, one of Miguel Padura's paintings was accessioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This will be his first solo exhibition at a South Florida museum. Padura is a painter's painter. He handles design, palette, textures, and lighting with great flair. His themes, universal in nature, have gained him legions of fans within the Latin American art market and has lifted his career to new heights.
Mary Ellen Mark is one of the best photojournalists working today. Her photography is one of great power which speaks directly to the heart. The stories she tells with her pictures are passionately seen and clearly communicated: individuals emerge from the chaos of famine, homelessness, and disease, to give a human face to the larger social issues with which Mark is concerned. Her work has appeared in LIFE, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, Stern, and Paris Match, to name just a few of the magazines which have published her work.
