Statement of Purpose

The mission of MAM is to exhibit, collect, preserve and interpret international art with a focus on the art of the Western Hemisphere from the 1940s to the present. To complement its mission and to provide a broader historical context, MAM presents works of art outside of this time frame when appropriate.

MAM was established as a collecting institution in 1996. Led by a diverse group of Miami leaders, MAM evolved from the Center for the Fine Arts, which was founded in 1984 as a space solely for traveling exhibitions.

The MAM promotes artistic expression and the exchange of ideas reflecting the diversity of its community and its pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas.

The mission of the MAM is to exhibit, collect, preserve and interpret international art with a focus on the art at the Western Hemisphere from the World War II era to the present.

To complement its mission and to provide a broader historical context, the MAM presents works of art outside of this time frame when appropriate.

The MAM is dedicated to education and scholarship. To this end, the MAM takes a variety or approaches including publications and other materials to interpret its collection and exhibitions for its many audiences. The MAM engages the community in lively exchange, fosters fresh ideas and conveys the excitement of the creatiue process.

The MAM is a catalyst for the visual arts nationally and internationally.

Highlights & Collections

In the European tradition of a Kunsthalle. the MAM opened in 1984 as a private/public partnership to advance the knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts in South Florida.

A major highlight of the cultural life in South Florida, the MAM is situated in the Philip Johnson - designed Metro-Dade cultural complex in downtown Miami.

On the occasion of the MAM's 10th anniversary, the Trustees realized that Miami had matured into a vibrant international city. But to be a truly great city, Miami needed a central museum with a permanent collection.

The Center's Trustees voted to transform CFA from a Kunsthalle into a museum with a permanent collection that reflects Miami's growing importance internationally and its pivotal geography at the crossroads of the Americas.

To insure that the Center moves ahead with broad public participation, the CFA launched a community-wide long-range planning process in 1995: nearly 200 citizens joined in developing the Center's vision for the future.

As a sign of this new direction the Center was renamed The Miami Art Museum of Dade County in Fall 1996. This far-reaching decision and new name will propel CFA into the next century.

Miami Art Museum of Dade County receives both private and public funding. More than 50% of its annual support comes from corporations, individuals, and foundations. It is recognized by the State of Florida as a Major Cultural Institution and receives major funding through the Florida Department of State, the Florida Arts Council, and the Division of Cultural Affairs. The 1996-97 exhibition programs are sponsored in part by the Dade County Cultural Affairs Council, and the Metropolitan Dade County Board of County Commissioners.
