Statement of Purpose

Tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions are available for groups of any age. news01@artcom.com's education coordinator at least three weeks in advance to make arrangements.

Friends of Art, the museum's membership organization, was established in 1931 to "vitalize" the artistic life of the college." Over the ensuing decades, contributions have provided crucial funding for exhibitions and related programming. We deeply value the loyalty of our present members and invite the participation of new ones.

Summit: Vittorio Sella, Mountaineer and Photographer

29 January-10 March 2000

Between 1879 and 1909, Italian alpinist and photographer Vittorio Sella (1859-1943) made spectacular images of the mountains and inhabitants of the most remote regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Alaska. This exhibition, organized by the museum's curator Wendy Watson and mountaineer Paul Kallmes, includes more than 120 of his orginal photographs, including mammoth panoramas of the Himalayas, the Caucasus, and the Alps. The exhibition is accompanied by an award-winning book published by Aperture. The exhibition will travel to the New York School of Interior Design (12 April-27 May) and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Banff, Canada (14 September-26 November).

The Broad View: Photographs of Michael A. Smith

4 January-9 March 2000

Remarkable views of the American wilderness and urban fabric are included in this exhibition of panoramic photographs by Michael A. Smith. Using an 8 by 20-inch camera, Smith recorded landscapes ranging from the Canyon de Chelly and the Snake River to downtown New Orleans. These remarkable images support his theory that it is "how" one sees, rather than "what" one sees that makes any photograph interesting.

Chromaform: Color in Contemporary Sculpture

8 April-28 May 2000

Through the work of emerging, mid-career, and established artists from the United States and Mexico, this exhibition will investigate the role of color in post-formal sculpture to determine the extent to which it transcends the expressive, compositional, and decorative effects of earlier polychrome sculpture through meaning, reference, and a renewed critical interest in beauty.

The Stroke of Genius: Drawings of the Old Masters

8 April-28 May 2000

Works of art from the permanent collection, including new acquisitions, are featured in this show organized by John Varriano, Idella Plimpton Kendall Professor of Art, with students in his seminar on Renaissance and Baroque drawings. The seminar and exhibition will consider issues of technique, function, expressive effect, and audience as essential elements of a medium that was central to studio practice in both northern and southern Europe during the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries.

The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum will close after May 28 for renovation and expansion.

The museum offices will remain open during the project.

Anticipated reopening date is February, 2002.

• Open Tuesday-Friday 11 am to 5 pm
• Open Saturday and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm
• Closed certain academic holidays.

Admission & Directions: The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum is closed for renovation and expansion. 

• Parking and Admission are free. The Museum is accessible for the physically challenged.

• The Mount Holyoke College campus is located on route 116 in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Signs on campus will direct you to the museum.

• From the North: Take Rt. 91 South to Exit 20 (Northampton/Hadley). Turn left at first stoplight (Damon Road), go 1 mi. to stoplight. Turn right at stoplight onto Rt. 9. Follow Rt. 9 over river to first stoplight (Rt. 47). Turn right onto Rt. 47 and go 8 mi. to South Hadley green.

• From the South: Take Rt. 91 North to Exit 16 (Rt. 202-Holyoke/South Hadley). At bottom of ramp, turn right and go east on Rt. 202 through Holyoke, across the Connecticut River. Take the Rt. 202 North exit off the rotary (2nd exit) and then take second exit (Rt. 116 South Hadley/Amherst) onto Rt. 116. The South Hadley green is approximately 3 miles further on Rt. 116 North.

• From the West: Take the Mass. Pike East to Exit 4 (W. Springfield). Turn onto Rt. 91 North and follow directions from Rt. 91 North.

• From the East: Take Mass Pike West to Exit 5 (Holyoke/Chicopee) and bear right after toll booth. At end of ramp, turn left on Rt. 33 and go 5 mi. to Rt. 116 North. Go 2 mi. to the South Hadley green.

• From South Hadley green: Take Park Street and turn right at second road into campus. The museum is on the right, adjacent to the greenhouse.
