Statement of Purpose:

Family-oriented facility with collections and exhibitions related to the Hi-Desert's unique natural history and historical elements.

Highlights & Collections:

This museum is not a place where you have to be quiet and listen. We encourage questions and active participation so that all members of the family will have a fun and educational time. Among the things that you will see when you vist are:

Natural History Diorama - features animals of the Desert and other regions of California

Kid's Corner - a hands-on activity area for "kidds" of all ages with a variety of activities related to the exhibits of the museum.

Mini-Zoo - a chance to see small desert animals and reptiles up close and learn more about thier habitat and diet.

Rock & Mineral Collection - a comprehensive look at the natural elements, fossils from the Paleozoic era and a special viewing room for fluorescents.

Temporary Exhibits - rotating exhibits installed for a limited time focusing on a variety of topics related to the the museum's mission statement.

The Museum is primarily a natural history museum that holds collections related to its mission statement.

These include: rocks and minerals, taxidermied specimens, live specimens, insects, flora and a Native American collection. In additon, the museum has a growing historical collection of items realted to the local history of the Morongo Basin.

Exhibits:

Another America is a traveling exhibit that takes a comprehensive look at the importance of maps on the Native American culture. The pottery exhibit complements the map exhibit with examples of Native American pots and the process of making them.

The Museum's annual look at desert wildflowers through the prints of local artist Henry Mockel in conjunction with actual specimens. It is a great guide for those who are coming to the desert during our beautiful wildflower season.

A look at some of the best work of our local young talented artists. Another annual tradition and well attended show!

This exhibit, co-sponsored by the Hi-Desert Water District, is a look at the desert's most valuable and expendable resource- water. The exhibit will cover the various sources of water in the desert and ways in which responsible citizens should conserve water for future generations.

A look at the Trinity Nuclear Site and the impact of the nuclear age on the desert throught the eyes of photographer Harris Fogel.

The Museum will explore various holiday customs from around the world that have resulted from ancient celebrations of the winter solstice and the effects that it has played in out modern day celebrations including Christmas, Hanakkuk and Kwanzaa.

Hours:

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are closed Mondays and all major holidays.

Admission & Directions:

The Museum is owned and operated by the Town of Yucca Valley. There is no admission charge.

The Museum is also supported by the Hi-Desert Nature Museum Association Inc. - a private, non-profit organization that provides additional funding, sponsors exhibition openings, and provides volunteers to assist with museum operations. Membership is open to all persons of all ages. Members receive a 10% discount in the Museum Store and a quarterly newsletter with news of the Museum and articles on desert natural history and history subjects.

The Museum is part of the Townn of Yucca Valley Community Ceneter Complex which is on Dumosa Avenue on the north side of State Highway 62. From Interstate 10 take State Highway 62 east to Yucca Valley, then left on Dumosa Avenue. From Twentynine palms and Joshua Tree take Highway 62 west to Yucca Valley, turn right on Dumosa Avenue.
