Statement of Purpose:
One of the premier showcases for French Impressionism in the Great
Plains
states. Also, American, Native American, modern art;
photography & more.

Highlights:
The recently opened Mary and Howard Lester Wing, designed by renowned
architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen, showcases the Weitzenhoffer Collection
of French Impressionism, with works by Degas, Gauguin, Monet,
Pissarro, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others. Other strengths of the
permanent collection include 20
th century American
paintings,
Southwestern art, American Indian art, ceramics, photography, Asian
art,
Persian miniatures, modern contemporary art, icons and more.

Leon Polk Smith: American
Original
Currently on view through
Sept 24
Oklahoma-born
artist Leon Polk Smith (U.S. 1906-1996) was known for his minimalist,
geometric
abstractions. For this exhibition, works from the museum’s permanent
collection
are combined with loaned paintings from the Brooklyn Museum
and the Leon Polk Smith Estate. Important paintings from various stages
of
Smith’s career provide a general survey of his work. On September 12,
Robert T.
Buck, former director of the Brooklyn Museum
will visit the
museum to present a lecture on Leon Polk Smith.

Ford
Oct 14 through Dec 31
A
retrospective of over 60 Charles Henri Ford photographs (1930s-1980s) –
depicting
primarily famous artists and writers, but also street scenes from New
York,
Rome, and Katmandu – in Ford’s first solo museum show in the United
States.
Simultaneously, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art will present an
exhibition of
works by Ford’s longtime close friend, Harold Stevenson.
Harold Stevenson: The Great
Society
Oct 14 through Dec 31
A
two-year project commissioned in the mid-1960s by Alexandre
Iolas and Brooks Jackson, The
Great Society is a series of 100 paintings
by Harold Stevenson. Stevenson, an Oklahoma-born artist who has never
given up
permanent residence in Idabel, moved to New York as a young man in the 1950s
and has been a vital
member of the art world for five decades. The paintings in this
exhibition
feature the faces of everyday people from the McClain County
area. The series has not been exhibited since it appeared in Paris in 1968. The
Guggenheim
Museum recently
acquired Stevenson’s
famous 39-foot-long painting of a frontal male nude, The
New Adam.

Great Society during this Museum Association-sponsored event. In
