Statement of Purpose:
The Friends of the Middle Border exists to preserve and promote the heritage
of the Native American and immigrant people of the Middle Border states,
primarily for the period 1600-1939, and interpret the museum's collection for
the general public through educational tours, permanent exhibitions, and special
programming.
FMB takes its name from "The Middle Border", author Hamlin Garland's name for America's last frontier--the Missouri River Valley--where immigrants and homesteaders moving west met the prospectors and cattlement returning east.
Highlights & Collections:
Walk through our front door and take a step back into time! Trace the peoples of the Middle Border region from prehistory to the Great Depression. Learn the history of South Dakota's first inhabitants in our American Indian Gallery with nineteen exhibit cases of artifacts dating from pre-contact to the turn of the 20th century. See Middle Border life through the eyes of South Dakota's finest artists in the Case Dakota Art Gallery. Imagine what life was like for early setttlers as you visit our pioneer home settings. Take a walk down mainstreet in the early 1900's complete with early automobiles, a doctor's office, pharmacy, post office and general store. On the museum grounds, see early farm equipment that helped to turn the untamed prairie into the world's breadbasket. Visit a one room territorial schoolhouse, a country church, a train depot and a fully restored Italianate mansion that was once home to Louis Beckwith, co-founder of Mitchell's World Famous Corn Palace. American Indian Gallery:
19 exhibit cases of artifacts spanning from prehistory thru the 1890's. The collection features excellent examples of quillwork, beadwork and many other items.
Case Dakota Art Gallery:
- Best known for "Dakota Woman" by Harvey Dunn.
Gallery also includes original works by:
- Gutzon Borglun, creator of Mount Rushmore.
- James Earle Fraser, creater of the famous sculpture "End of the Trail" and designer of the Buffalo Nickel.
- Oscar Howe, world-reknowned Native American artist.
- Charles Hargens, illustrator for such publications as "Saturday Evening Post".
- Marylyn Sunderman, Ada Caldwell, Nancy Coonsman Hahn,
Childe Hassam, Anne Hyatt Huntington, Elihu Vedder and many others.
