To further the cultural and educational
interests of the people of the
state,
to present through the use of it's collections and activities the proud
heritage
and unique historical background, and to preserve and exhibit the
environmental
and cultural richness of the state of Maine.

- The Maine State
Museum presents exhibits of Maine's natural
environment, prehistory, social history and manufacturing hentage.
"Back to Nature" has life-sized scenes depicting plants and
animals of the rocky coast and saltwater marsh; a spring marsh scene
with bald eagle; inland waterway in winter with moose, beaver, fox, and
otters; mountains in autumn featuring a pool with live trout; and a
woodland in summer with white-tailed deer. Also featured in this area
is a display of 40 gems and gem minerals including beryl, gamet, gold
and tourmaline found in Maine.
- The exhibit on
lumbering features the 1846 steam locomotive
LION, which was used to haul lumber from Whitneyville to Machiasport
and a Lombard log hauler manufactured in Waterville. The shipbuilding
exhibit has a 40 foot section of the Downeaster ST MARY and tools used
in the building of ships and the sewing of sails. The granite exhibit
features a stone wagon as well as examples of polished granite from
different quarries in Maine. The ice harvesting display shows hand and
horse drawn equipment and photo murals that show the ice being cut on
the rivers and the storage of ice in the large ice houses. The exhibit
on fishing has examples of saltwater fishing gear, hand-line cod
fishing and sardine canning equipment.
- The "Made in Maine"
exhibit shows where people worked in Maine
mostly during the nineteenth century. It features a water-powered
woodworking mill, a two-story textile factory and more than one
thousand Maine-made products. The final display area highlights the
cupola furnace from the Portland Stove Company and automobiles, boats
and engines that were made in Maine. "12,000 Years in Maine" tells the
story of Maine's first inhabitants and how they lived. The tusk of a
woolly manunoth found in Scarborough is featured in the beginning of
the exhibit. A life-sized diorama featuring stones used by the
Paleo-Indians as a meat cache introduces the segment on Maine's
earliest inhabitants. Two video presentations show how stone tools and
weapons were made, and a re-creation of a shell midden provides a
virtual time capsule of how people lived in Maine fr zom about 5,00 to
400 years ago.
- The "Struggle for
Identity" exhibit tells the geographical and
political 4tory of Maine from the 1600s through statehood to 1842, when
the present boundaries of Maine were established. The Maine State
Museum is located in the Library-Museum-Archives Building. All exhibits
are wheelchair accessible. The Museum is open Monday through Friday 9
to 5, Saturday 10 to 4, and Sunday 1 to 4. A Museum Shop features
educational materials, Maine items and books.

Maine's State Tree, Past and Present, Featured in
Exhibits and Special Events
A new exhibit, "Off Limits: Pine Trees, Politics, and the King's
Broad Arrow," is just one of several presentations included in the
museum's focus on the white pine during July and August. In addition to
the exhibit, a free day of special events on Saturday, July 16 will
feature talks and demonstrations about Maine's state tree.

New Rotation of Historic Civil War Flags Installed in
"To the Highest Standard"
Twenty-four Civil War flags, which will be rotated and shown in
groups of three every six months, have been installed in the popular
"To the Highest Standard" exhibit. The flags' limited exhibition is
designed to minimize light exposure to the fragile textiles. The
current flag rotation will extend through June 2015.
