ARTHUR SECUNDA Biography

The international career of American artist Arthur Secunda is marked by versatility and success.

Born in New Jersey in 1927, he attended New York University and the Art Students League, continuing his art studies in Paris with Ossip Zadkine, Andre L'hote, and at the Academic de la Grande Chaumiere.

For years, Secunda supported his art (and himself) by working at a variety of jobs which included being a milkman, museum curator of education, jazz pianist, university instructor and lecturer, radio and TV personality, art critic, factory worker, illustrator and ceramic designer. He now devotes full time to his art and presently divides his residence between Los Angeles and Southern France.

A listing of one-man shows numbers over eighty. They include exhibits at the Musee Reattu in Arles (France), the Palm Springs Desert Museum (California), and the international Art Fairs at Basel, Paris and New York.

Secunda's works are collected by a wide public as well as many important institutions in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

This impressive list includes the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and numerous European and other institutions.

He is particularly noted for his brilliant collages and striking graphics. J.M. Rouquette, Director of the Arles Museum, has said "Secunda's collages make use of a very seductive, original and somewhat mysterious technique in which the actual shredding (of paper) coincides with a very personal philosophy of color."

His graphics have been acclaimed in Europe and the U.S. for their lush color and technical inventiveness. His innovations in the art of the print have inspired two grants to the Tamarind Lithography Workshop and a residency at the Centre Genevois de Gravure Contemporain in Geneva.

At the moment, Secunda is working with new cast paper techniques in France and the U.S. This project has taken him to the famed 16th century paper mills of Richard de Bas in France where he was invited to experiment creating collages from pulp and castings at the paper's very origins.
