Statement of Purpose:
As the art museum of the University of Kansas, the Spencer
is used to teach the history of art and offer first-hand experience with
art to the people of Kansas.
Art of Europe and America from the Middle Ages to present; Japanese prints and Edo paintings, contemporary Chinese painting; quilts; prints , drawings and photographs collection.
Highlights & Collections:
The comprehensive collection spans the history of
European, eastern Asia, and United States art. The galleries are open,
free, to the public six days a week (closed Mondays). Seven galleries
display selections from the 17,000 piece collection, including works by
Hokusai, Riemenschneider, Rossetti, Homer, O'Keeffe, Benton, Curry,
Chihuly, Ringgold. Four other galleries display changing exhibitions either
drawn from the collection or touring from other museums.
Medieval, 17th & 18th Century European; 19th Century
American painting; Asian ceramics, prints & paintings; photography; prints
& drawings.

Lawrence is 30 miles west of Kansas City. The museum is on the
northern edge of the campus, on Mississippi Street, between the student
union and the football stadium.
