Statement of Purpose:

The purpose of the Washington University Gallery of Art is to share its resources in enriching the educational and cultural environment of the greater St. Louis area as an integral educational and cultural component of Washington University in St. Louis.

Art museum with prominent holdings in 19th and 20th century American and European paintings and sculpture.

Highlights & Collections:

The Gallery of Art is a descendant of the first museum west of the Mississippi River and preserves an extraordinary collection of art that Washington University has assembled over the past 143 years. The Gallery is open during the academic years and presents displays of the university art collections as well as major temporary exhibitions, faculty and student exhibitions.

Washington University has a collection of 16,000 works of art. The focus of the collection is nineteenth- and twentieth-century European and American paintings, drawings, and sculpture which reflect the University's tradition of buying contemporary art over the past 143 years. In addition, the University preserves the John Max Wulfing Numismatics collection, a comprehensive collection of ancient coins regarded as among the largest such collections in the United States.

Monday through Friday 9-4:30; Saturday and Sunday 1-5.

Admission & Directions:

Admission to the galleries is free. Special events are also free unless otherwise noted.

The Washington University Gallery of Art is located in Steinberg Hall on the southeast corner of the Washington University Hilltop campus. It is the second building from the corner of Skinker and Forsyth Boulevards. The entrance is from the parking lot on the north side of the building.
