Statement of Purpose:

The West Point Museum is the largest diversified collection of military artifacts available for the general public, researchers and cadets to view.

The museum was founded officially in 1854 by Congressional Act, but traces the roots of its collections to the defeat of the British at Saratoga in 1777.

The Museum serves the Cadet and greater West Point Community with its exhibits which focus on the History of West Point, History of Warfare, History of the Army (in both War and Peace) as well as technological history of small and large weapons.

Highlights & Collections:

As part of the exhibit program the Museum hosts traveling and other special exhibits pertinent to West Point and the Cadets. Most recently, exhibits from the National Portrait Gallery and a private collection of Russian Space Artifacts were featured in the Museum.

The Museum holds approximately 45,000 historic artifacts and has collected objects since West Point was established in 1802. Collections have always been assembled at the Military Academy in various departments, but not until 1854 were they consolidatd into one "ordnance museum" when The West Point Museum was established.

It is the oldest and largest museum in the United States Army, and the most diversified collection in the nation for the study of military science and military history.

The collections include works of art (botb battle art and portraiture), weapons, uniforms, accoutrments, and memorabilia wthich encompass the evolution of warfare from Ancient times to the present.

Special artifacts to be seen include George Washington's pistols, Thadeus Kosciuszko's sword, Napoleon's sword and Frank Borman's Space Suit from the Apollo 8 Mission, are among tbe obects belonging to noted leaders from the past.

A World War I 6-ton American tank, U.. Army Jeep and csing for the Atomic bomb, "Fat Man" are on display in the museum's large weapons gallery. These comprise only a few of the nearly 1,500 objects on display in the West Point Museum.

The Daughters of the United States Army (DUSA) operate the museum gift shop and provide objects for purchase which relate to the museum's displays and their historye. The shop is open seven days aweek from l0:30 to 4 00 p.m.

The Museum also operates West Point's historic Fort Putnam which overlooks the Military Academy and is open to the public. The fort is a revolutionary war fort and is open Thursday through Monday from 11:00 to 3:00 p.m.
