Statement of Purpose

Northern Arizona University Art Museum and Galleries: Old Main Art Museum and the Richard E. Beasley Art Museum and Gallery

The goal of the museum program is to display rotating contemporary art exhibitions, featuring both national and international artists. These exhibits are frequently supplemented with workshops, demonstrations and guest artist lectures. The museum program also serves as a resource for the Bachelor of Fine Art Program at NAU and is designed to enhance studio courses.

Highlights & Collections

Located in the historic Old Main building on Northern Arizona University's north campus, the Old Main Art Museum features historic collections as well as contemporary exhibits. Constructed between 1894 and 1899 and renovated in 1989, Old Main is an impressive showcase for the variety of art works displayed within its walls. The Museum is also home to the Marguerite Hettel Weiss collection, which includes paintings by Philip Curtis and Diego Rivera and turn of the century furniture.

Changing every 60 days, contemporary works by local, state, national and international artists are highlighted in the galleries. Exhibits have included international tapestry and watercolor invitationals, Latvian paintings, a Korean metal and fiber exhibit, Hungarian ceramics and paintings, and mixed media exhibits by several Arizona artists. Open to the public and free, the galleries in Old Main promote contemporary art in historic surroundings.

The NAU Art Museum and Galleries also include the Richard E. Beasley Art Museum and Gallery. Mr. Beasley was Assistant Dean of the College of Creative and Communication Arts from 1989 until he passed away in July of 1992. Prior to that position, he served as director of the NAU School of Art and Design from 1987 to 1989. From 1968 until his untimely death, this versatile artist taught painting, print making, drawing and calligraphy at NAU. Beasley was admired by students, sought after for lectures and demonstrations nationally and internationally by fellow calligraphic artists, and known for contributing to establishing calligraphy as an art form in its own right. The gallery in the Performing and Fine Arts building was renamed the Richard E. Beasley Art Museum and Gallery in May of 1993 in honor of Mr. Beasley and his contribution to NAU. The Richard E. Beasley Art Museum and Gallery features 30 day exhibits of contemporary art and includes a permanent display of selected works by Mr. Beasley. Works by NAU students are also highlighted including annual juried exhibits and biannual Bachelor of Fine Art exhibits. Admission is free.

Tours and slide lectures are also offered. The Old Main Art Museum and the Richard E. Beasley Art Museum and Gallery offer unique spaces for receptions, seminars, concerts, and other events. Rental fees are reasonable. Call (520) 523-3471 for information.
