Marion Koogler McNay (1883-1950) was a patron of the arts and a philanthropist who wanted to expose San Antonians to the pleasures of modern art. Thus in her will she dictated the establishment of the McNay Art Museum for the "advancement and enjoyment
of modern art." She left her art collection, her residence, the surrounding 23 acres of land and a major portion of her wealth to create the McNay, which opened in 1954.
