Statement of Purpose:
The Ohio Historical Center and Ohio Village in Columbus present a dynamic panorama of Ohio's past. Together, this striking contemporary museum and
re-created nineteenth-century community form the nucleus of the Ohio Historical Society's statewide network of nearly sixty historical sites.
In the nationally renowned Ohio Historical Center, permanent exhibits explore Ohio's history, prehistory, and natural history; temporary exhibits on a variety of topics change year-round.
Smaller galleries feature an array of outstanding displays, such as the famous Spirit of '76 painting and the Christopher Collection of interior fumishings and Currier and Ives lithographs.
The center's Museum Shop offers books, toys, crafts, replicas, and other history-related gift items.
The Ohio Historic Preservation Office and the Archives/Library also are housed in the center.
At Ohio Village, visitors can experience the daily life of a Civil War-era town. Craftspeople fashion and sell a variety of period items such as baskets, leather goods, and woodblock prints. Other costumed interpreters pursue activities typical of 1860s
townspeople, including farming, cooking, and playing games.
The Ohio Village Singers and other musicians provide special entertainment on summer weekends and during the Christmas season. Visitors can even get a taste of the past at the Colonel Crawford Inn, which serves traditional midday meals when the village
is open.
Numerous special events, workshops, and reenactments held at the center and village throughout the year add to visitors' learing and enjoyment.
