To play a major role in the cultural life of the community, the region, and the nation; to become a focal point for the creative energy of Southern art scholarship; and to create a legacy to enrich the lives of generations to come by preserving and building upon our artistic heritage.
Nationally, the Morris Museum of Art is the only museum dedicated entirely to Southern art and artists. In addition, the museum houses the Center for the Study of Southern Painting, a comprehensive reference library, a new Orientation Center/Educational Gallery, and an outstanding gift shop. The museum's programs include gallery tours, artists' lectures, workshops, annual symposiums, and musical performances.
The museum has ten main galleries focusing upon antebellum portraiture, Civil War illustration, the Black presence in Southern art, still-life painting, Southern impressionists, works on paper, twentieth-century art, self-taught artists, contemporary art of the South, and a landscape survey spanning more than 150 years. In addition, there is a gallery devoted to the works of Robin Hill and a gallery in memory of Dr. Robert P. Coggins.
