Statement of Purpose:

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston opened the doors of its original building Copley Square in 1876. The rapid growth of the collections made a new location necessary, and in 1909, the Museum moved to its present location on Huntington Avenue. Today, as the largest museum in New England and one of the five largest in the country, the Museum services close to a million visitors every year. To augment the permanent collection, the Museum offers a rotating schedule of special exhibitions, highlighting both the Museum's holdings as well as loaned objects from around the world. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, located at 465 Huntington Avenue, is a private, non-profit institution and is one of the few major museums in the country that receives virtually no operating support from the city, state, or federal government.

The MFA is dedicated to serving a wide range of visitors through direct encounters with works of art. Its Department of Education offers numerous programs and classes designed for adults, families, children, students, and visitors with special needs. A diverse selection of public programs including lectures, concerts, and films, is scheduled year round. For more information on the Museum's upcoming educational programs, please call (617) 369-3300.
