Statement of Purpose
The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota is a
teaching museum devoted to the sharing of knowledge, inspiration, and
understanding of art and culture with students, faculty, and all the
people of Minnesota and beyond.
Highlights & Collections
Housed since 1993 in a striking new stainless steel building designed by
Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum
serves a university community of more than 60,000 students, faculty, and
staff, as well as the thriving arts and cultural community of Minneapolis
and St. Paul. Founded in 1934 as the University Art Museum, the new
museum provides an interdisciplinary approach to the arts and humanities
with a program of exhibitions, lectures, and special events. The museum's
collection features early 20th-century American artists, including the
largest collection anywhere of works by Marsden Hartley and Alfred Maurer,
as well as important pieces by their contemporaries Milton Avery, Lyonel
Feininger, and Georgia O'Keeffe.
The Weisman's collection focuses on American art from the first half of the 20th century and features the largest collection anywhere of works by Marsden Hartley and Alfred Maurer, as well as important pieces by their contemporaries Milton Avery, Lyonel Feininger, and Georgia O'Keeffe.
