Statement of Purpose:

The Des Moines Art Center has been serving Des Moines and its visitors since 1948.

It is the largest ART museum in Iowa, and a major resource for 20th century art, architecture, and art education.

Highlights & Collections:

Located in the city's beautiful Greenwood Park, the Art Center's buildings are, themselves, works of art.

The original 1948 building was designed by Eliel Saarinen. Additions by I.M. Pei (1968), and Richard Meier (1984) completed this unique architectural showcase.

19th and 20th century art.

The Des Moines Art Center's permanent collections, developed over the last 52 years, include an outstanding selection of works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. 1600 artists are represented in the permanent collections, with almost 4000 works of art valued at more than $120 million. The Art Center maintains a collection of approximately 1,700 works on paper. With buildings designed by Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei, and Richard Meier, it is recognized as one of the premier collections of contemporary art in the United States and has been acknowledged by the New York Times as "a world-class museum."
