Statement of Purpose:
It is the mission of the Ackland Art Museum to educate and delight using original works of art.
Highlights & Collections:
Western art from antiquity to the present. The Ackland Art Museum opened in 1958 to bring great works of art to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the education and enjoyment of students, faculty and the regional community. Today, its well-
rounded collection of over 14,000 objects includes ancient Greek and Roman art, Western painting and sculpture since the end of the Middle Ages, works on paper from the 15th to the 20th century, art of Asia and Africa, North Carolina folk art and
contemporary art.
The Ackland's major collections include:
- European paintings by artists including Rubens, Degas and Pissarro;
- Asian art, with significant holdings in Indian miniatures and Japanese painting;
- North Carolina folk art; and
- prints, drawings and photographs.
Exhibits & Special Events:
- Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925-1972)
- March 23 through May 4, 1997
- An overview of major themes developed by a major experimental photographer. On loan from Visual Studies Workshop.
- "Val Telberg and Anais Nin: House of Incest"
- March 23 through May 4, 1997
- Photomontages created by Telberg in collaboration with the author Nin for her 1958 book "House of Incest." On loan from Visual Studies Workshop.
- "Circles of Divinity"
- June 14-October 12, 1997
- An examination of how diverse cultures have employed circular and spiral motifs as emblems of the divine. Includes work in various media from the Ackland's permanent collection.

- Wed.-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Sun. 1-5 p.m.
- Closed New Year's Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Admission & Directions:
Free and open to the public.
From Interstate 40, take Highway 54 (exit 273) into Chapel Hill. Proceed through the University of North Carolina campus to South Columbia Street and turn right. The Ackland is located on South Columbia near the Franklin Street. Parking is available
one block away at several
pay-lots on Rosemary Street.
