Statement of Purpose:

Changing exhibitions and the Discovery Theater for children.

19th century American industrial design. Experimental gallery featuring innovative exhibits.

Highlights & Collections:

The dynamic spirit of America a century ago is recaptured in this, the second oldest Smithsonian building on the Mall. Designed specifically to exhibit materials acquired from the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, this building was also the scene of James Garfield's inaugural ball.

Today, this building features changing exhibitions of the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture and other Smithsonian organizations. The Discovery Theater presents special performances for children from September through July. For performance information, call (202) 357-1500 (voice and TTY).

Highlights include: Baldwin locomotive, 19th-century tools and machinery, changing exhibitions.
