Statement of Purpose
The de Saisset Museum was
built adjacent to Mission Santa Clara in 1955 through a generous
bequest from Isabel de Saisset in memory of her brother, Ernest.
Since its founding, the museum
has developed into a unique art and history museum.
The de Saisset Museum is the
caretaker of the University's California History Collection, which
includes historic and ethnographic artifacts from the pre-contact
Native American period, through the founding of the Franciscan Mission
in 1777, to the early days of Santa Clara College.
The museum's permanent
collection includes a wide range of art and ethnographic objects from
Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
The collection of contemporary
prints and Photographs is particularly strong, including works by Ansel
Adams, Ruth Bernhard, David Best, Bruce Connor, Sam Francis, Annie
Leibovitz, Nathan Oliviera, and Edward Weston.
The de Saisset Museum presents
changing art exhibitions, lectures, readings, concerts, films, and
tours throughout the year.
The museum is open free to the
public Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during scheduled
exhibitions.
