Statement of Purpose

The ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center shall communicate the vital importance of the mining industry in our civilization, provide educational resources for students and teachers in the earth sciences, and preserve the mining history of Arizona and the western United States.

Opened in February of 1997, the Mineral Discovery Center's award-winning exhibit center and mine tours offer the public an opportunity to examine a modern, working, open-pit copper mine up close and discover how this versatile metal plays such an important role in everyday life.

Highlights & Collections

The only tour of a modern, working, open-pit copper mine in Arizona that is open to the public without advance reservations.

Historic mining equipment from southeast Arizona and a growing variety of rocks and minerals from around the world.

Exhibits & Special Events

Hands-on exhibits explore a variety of copper-bearing rocks and minerals and the processes used to make pure copper metal. Other exhibits includes a "cut-away kitchen" revealing some of the common uses of copper in the home. Discovery Theater offers a large-screen video presentation on the production and uses of copper and another on the sources of common materials that go into products most of us use every day.

Discovery Center Hour of Operation Gift Shop and Exhibit Center:
Tuesday through Saturday – 9:00A.M. to 5:00P.M.

Mine Tours:
Tuesday through Saturday
Tours: 9:30A.M., 11:00 A.M., 12:30 P.M., 2:00 P.M., 3:30 P.M.
(Tour schedule is subject to change. Please call for reservations.)

Sunday & Monday – Closed
Major Holidays – Closed

 * No pets allowed please, except for service dogs.

From Tucson, take Interstate 19 south to Pima Mine Road (Exit 80). On Pima Mine Road, go west a short distance and turn left into the main entrance.
