Statement of Purpose
The ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center shall communicate the vital importance of the mining industry in our civilization, provide educational resources for students and teachers in the earth sciences, and preserve the mining history of Arizona and the western United States.
Opened in February of 1997, the Mineral Discovery Center's award-winning exhibit center and mine tours offer the public an opportunity to examine a modern, working, open-pit copper mine up close and discover how this versatile metal plays such an important role in everyday life.
Highlights & Collections
The only tour of a modern, working, open-pit copper mine in Arizona that is open to the public without advance reservations.
Historic mining equipment from southeast Arizona and a growing variety of rocks and minerals from around the world.
Exhibits & Special Events

Hands-on exhibits explore a variety of copper-bearing rocks and minerals and the processes used to make pure copper metal. Other exhibits includes a "cut-away kitchen" revealing some of the common uses of copper in the home.
Discovery Theater offers a large-screen video presentation on the production and uses of copper and another on the sources of common materials that go into products most of us use every day.
Hours:
- Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Mine tours depart from the Exhibit Center
approximately every half hour between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Admission & Directions:
Admission is free to the Mineral Discovery Center exhibits, theater, and gift shop.
- Tickets for the mine tours are:
- $6.00 for Adults,
- $5.00 for Seniors (62+ years),
- $4.00 for Children (5-12 years) , Children under 5 years are free when accompanied by an adult.
- Group Rates are available for 8 or more persons;
please call (520) 625-8233 for reservations.
From Tucson, take Interstate 19 south to Pima Mine Road (Exit 80). On Pima Mine Road, go west a short distance and turn left into the main entrance.
