Statement of Purpose
The mission of Burton Cotton Gin & Museum is to tell the
story of a small Texas cotton town through the eyes of the historic Burton
Farmers' Gin..
Highlights & Collections
Tour the best-preserved gin from the turn-of-the century era of
full cotton gin mechanization. Other historic buildings include the Wehring Shoe
Shop, the Cotton Warehouse and the Burton Auto Garage.
The new Visitor Center and Museum Store opened March 12, 1999.
Volunteers restoring the complex have received technical
assistance from the Smithsonian Institution, the Texas Historical Commission,
the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Baylor University, Texas A & M
University, Texas Tech University, and the University of Texas.
The Burton Farmers' Gin and the Wehring Shoe Shop are listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
The operational gin still houses five 1932 Lummus gin stands and
a two-cylinder, 1925 Bessemer engine. The gin has been designated a National
Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers.
