Statement of Purpose

The Museum of the Gulf Coast combines conventional and an unconventional approach to tell the exciting story of the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast region. Traditional themes are utilized in interpreting the focus of Gulf Coast life before the arrival of man, the role of Native Americans, European contact, Hispanic legacy, the trauma of Civil War, economic and cultural growth, and the integration of the Gulf Coast region into the larger national and international community.

Highlights & Collections

The Museum of the Gulf Coast features such notable people from our town and area as Artist-Robert Rauschenberg, Coaches Jimmy Johnson, Bum Phillips, Wade Phillips, R.C. Slocum, "Babe" Zaharias. Music Greats include: Tex Ritter, Janis Joplin, Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt, Harry James, "The Big Bopper" J.P. Richardson, George Jones and many others are feature in the Notable People, Sports Legends and Music Legends sections of the Museum.

Hours:

Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission & Directions:

Regular adult - $3.50, Senior Citizen - $3.00, school age young people - $1.50, and pre-school children - .50. The Museum houses an orientation theater and a gift shop. The facility is handicap accessible. For further information, call 409/982-7000.

The 39,000 square foot Museum of the Gulf Coast is located at 701 Fourth Street in Port Arthur.
