The visitor will be given a guided tour through the History of
Surveying gallery which is highlighted by impressive murals,
dynamic multimedia, historic artifacts, and superb storytelling.
The focus of the narrative is not on how to surveying but how
surveying played a role in the development of America all the
way up to today.
The only place in the world that goes in depth into Abraham
Lincoln’s surveying career is the National Museum of Surveying.
Due to his success and exposure as a surveyor, Lincoln won his
first political position. The museum’s From Surveyor to
President Exhibit tells the importance of Lincoln’s surveying
career had on his entire life. This along with the Surveying the
Civil War Exhibit show how the surveying once again helped unify
the country both east-west and north-south.
Featured at the museum is NOAA's Science on a Sphere® where
children, tourists, and science enthusiasts adopt an
extraterrestrial viewpoint to experience the power and beauty of
the world and the universe. Science on a Sphere is a nearly six
foot hologram like movie system that displays NOAA and NASA
generated images and movies about Earth System science. This is
how the world was meant to be seen!
The entire museum is customizable and personalized for the
visitor. The Sphere can be customized by teachers or groups to
fit their interests. Go to sos.noaa.gov
and create your own playlists or ask the museum to play a
certain topic.
The visitor will leave with a deeper understanding of the world
around him or her and the role surveying has had in the
development of America. Check the schedule to see the next
family day or Surveying Academy. On these days, patrons can try
their hand at surveying by tackling one of your surveying
courses.
