To preserve the history of Le Sueur County, and educate people about the ways of life in the past.
We are housed in a historic 1895 red-brick schoolhouse, with the rooms turned into displays showing the history of Le Sueur County. Some major attractions that we have are: a 10,000 year old bison skull; a room dedicated to life in the early 1900's; displays for American wars like the Civil War, WWI, and WWII; one of only three micrometeorite detectors originally used in Explorer I and created by Robert Ward, the local "man of science"; original schoolhouse settings; and the largest collection of Genealogical records in Le Sueur County. We also have an original log cabin built 1869 and moved log-by-log to our location.
Native American artifacts, war items, and catholic church items. 1900's collections include: childrens toys, glassware, clothing, general store merchandise, kitchenware, appliances, and household items. We also have a collection of art from the most famous artists in Le Sueur County: Adolf Dehn, David Maass, Roger Preuss, and Lloyd Herfindahl.
If genealogy is what you are looking for, the Le Sueur County Historical Society is what you need for all of your Le Sueur County research. For some of our materials, visit http://www.lchs.mus.mn.us/g_center/materials.html. We do genealogical research via telephone, e-mail, and regular mail. If you would like research done by e-mail, please send your requests to roots@lchs.mus.mn.us. We do charge to do research by e-mail, but if you come and research yourself, members research for free! Visit http://www.lchs.mus.mn.us/g_center/research.html for the rates of research.
We are planning a Christmas Open House, similar to the one that we held last year. The dates for this event are not set, but we will decide upon the schedule within the next few weeks.
We are open during June, July, and August from Wednesday through Sunday, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. During May and September, we are open only on Saturday and Sunday. For making an appointment for hours other than these, e-mail Shirley Zimprich at director@lchs.mus.mn.us.
We do not charge for admission, although donations are appreciated. To join the Le Sueur County Historical Society, the membership fee is $15.00 for a single, or $25.00 for a family membership. Visit http://www.lchs.mus.mn.us/society/society.html for information about the benefits of belonging to the LCHS.
Take an exit in Mankato and take Hwy 14 to Madison Lake, then take Hwy 60 to Elysian.
From 35W: Get off 35W in Faribault and take Hwy 60 through Warsaw, Morristown, Waterville and then to Elysian.
In Elysian: We are located atop the highest hill in Elysian, right next to the watertower. Our street address is 301 N 2nd St. There are also several signs around the town (which is not very big), and shouldn't be too difficult to find.
