Statement of Purpose

The Muscarelle Museum of Art is dedicated to creating a dynamic environment for the exploration of art. Its mission is to provide a rich cultural resource for the College of William and Mary and to pursue an active role in the overall cultural life of the region through education and the presentation of works of art.

Highlights & Collections

The Muscarelle Museum of Art collection dates back to 1732 when the third Earl of Burlington gave the College of William and Mary a portrait of the physicist, Robert Boyle.  Since then, the collection has grown to over three thousand works of art and stands as a major artistic resource for the College and the region.

The Museum's second floor galleries are devoted to showcasing highlights of the permanent collection. Changing exhibitions of works on paper from the collection are featured in the first floor Herman Graphics Art Study Room.

Two large galleries on the 1st floor are devoted to national traveling exhibitions and loans from private collections.

Admission & Directions:

There is a general admission charge of $5.00.

From I-64 East or West: Exit 242 A (Route 199 West) for five miles to Jamestown Road (Route 31 North), right on Jamestown Road for one and one quarter miles. The Museum is on the left beside Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall.
