Statement of Purpose
To promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a gateway to America
Highlights & Collections
We offer guided tours of a partially-restored 1863 tenement building on the Lower East Side, which is also a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can visit period apartments (1870s and 1935) and hear the stories of actual residents--immigrant, work-class, urban pioneers--who lived in the building. We also offer a hands-on, interactive tour for kids and their families. Children are encouraged to role play as immigrants new to the neighborhood and will meet 13-year-old Victoria Confino (a costumed interpreter) in her 1916 apartment.
